Who am I

Who I am

The supervisor your supervisor did not have time to be.

Horacio Pérez Sánchez

I have been doing research for 25 years. I lead a structural bioinformatics group at the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM), where I also teach across the degrees in Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Medicine and Computer Engineering.

In those 25 years I have published over two hundred scientific articles, secured six million euros in competitive funding as principal investigator, supervised fifteen PhD theses, and reviewed projects and manuscripts for international journals and funding agencies.

Each of those numbers stands for real lessons, most of them learnt by getting things wrong first. That accumulated experience is what I share in mentoring.

Background

Twenty-five years, three paths that meet in me.

01

Research

Structural bioinformatics and computational drug discovery. 200+ articles, 15 PhDs supervised, €6M in national and European calls as PI.

02

Knowledge transfer

Participation in Horizon Europe projects, collaborations with pharmaceutical and biotech industry, scientific software in real use, and spin-offs.

03

Communication

I host the podcast Investigating the research since 2021, with 400 episodes and an active network of researchers across Spain, Latin America and Europe.

How I work

Three principles.

  1. Difficult things made simple.

If you cannot explain it on a whiteboard, you usually do not understand it fully. And if it is not understood, it is not decided well.

  2. Decisions, not hours.

In mentoring I do not sell time. I sell decisions taken and borrowed judgement while you develop your own.

  3. No hidden agenda.

I tell you what I think even if it is not what you want to hear. If I do not know something, I say so. If we do not fit, too.

Other projects

What also fills my time.

Synergium

For groups and institutions in Latin America wanting to enter the European R&D ecosystem. I act as a bridge: I find verifiable European partners for their Horizon, MSCA or bilateral projects. If it fits you, I tell you about it in a conversation.

Scientific software

I maintain and publish software with my group. If you are interested in the technical side, you can see what we do on the software page.

Shall we talk?

If you think I can help, book a first conversation. No commitment.
